Great interview I am really enjoying following your ideas right now. I think you're really onto some things.
Having recently moved from being independently musical into marketing and advertising (with hopes of always doing music) I am very interested in new ways of doing both.
"learn everything you can about marketing. That's the biggest challenge in music, now."
That is so so true but my question is: If you think about it recording used to be quite hard because you had to razzle up so many bucks just for that. And distribution was incredibly hard unless you got lucky. So does this mean that in fact the New Music industry is easier to navigate by two thirds?
I've been doing music seriously for almost ten years; thought I was just an artist but turns out I'm also a manager, booking agent, promoter, graphic designer, distributor, and the unofficial CEO of a company. Such talents I did not know I had...
The fact that it's easier these days to go independent is assuring and great for most artists, but being DIY doesn't exactly minimize the work. Which is why options like MuckWork are needed. Many musicians realize down the road that, hey we're not all going to be stars but there are ways to keep doing what you love and getting paid for it. So I think the MuckWork service will go over well, from both sides.
Great interview Derek, as always you are inspiring and just plain awesome!
