I'm a stereotypical entrepreneur
2008-05-29
It seems I'm a ridiculous walking stereotype of an entrepreneur. The Wikipedia page about entrepreneurship says entrepreneurs are...
- mercurial, that is, prone to insights, brainstorms, deceptions, ingeniousness and resourcefulness. cunning, opportunistic, creative, and unsentimental
- extremely optimistic in their decision-making processes
- prone to overconfidence and over generalisations
- tough, pragmatic people driven by needs of independence and achievement. They seldom are willing to submit to authority.
- primarily motivated by an overwhelming need for achievement and strong urge to build
Like one of those astrology or cultural moments where some generalization actually describes you exactly, I've realized I'm a type. A total stereotype. Oh well.
Oh and just to rub it in, I was born in Silicon Valley, California. Sheesh.
are you? I mean to say..you just are? Seems to me you've read a lot of books on the subject. Have you always fit the definition, or has your learning and experience molded you into what fits that definition?
Peace!

Better a stereotype than a monotype...
had a similar experience reading Wikipedia's definition of "psychedelic music" while working on a friend's CD, "A Moose Supreme" - we were absolutely pinned, but it ended up being a killer catchphrase for us
Well this doesn't surprise me young man!

You're mother and I have been telling you that your nothing but an entrepreneur your whole life!
Maybe now you'll listen to us!
ha! ha!
Hi Derek!
Hi Derek,
There is nothing wrong with self confidence.I believe in time you"ll mellow out a bit. Just a bit, that is.Life is a wonderfull journey of exsperiences,as long as we are willing to learn each time in order to grow through life, while we can give and share to others.
I almost thought for a minute you'r ready to jump off the deep end there, reading the above about yourself, but thank god you are still caring and sharing and do what you love to do best.Loved the song(Ready to live)Beautifully played on the Clarinet, never mind your criticism.Love the intro with the Piano going into the Clarinet, sensitive and touching coming from the heart.Hopefully you'll do something with that song.Let me know how you feel about that?
Laughed so much about the Dog and Cat in the office, and than the Mouse, another piece of pure Entertainment! You can make lots of money with that aswell. Now about those fabulous Snow monkeys,it must have asstounded you when you saw those?Love the waterspa ofcourse, and looked great.Thank you for sharing the Beauty,Goofy,Sensitivity and part of your life's journey! Thanks for all the Info aswell.
Keep up the good work, you'r doing alright. Sonja!
Isn't everybody this way?
Derek,
you seem to fit the mold while breaking it at the same time. What you did with CD Baby would have never happened if you were a muzzled sheep blindly following the industry norms.
Did what you did, what you are doing and what is to come!
Blessings,
Tony
Welcome to the club, Derek.
I think everyone is like this, at least my friends that are entrepreneurs.
Derek,
I've been through the mind bending, selfish, major label music meat grinding machine for over 20 years. I played drums in several bands and worked in independent distribution. But, the horrible direction the biz went in it finally tore out my soul and I basically dropped off the edge of the planet for about ten years.
Though in the last few years thanks to a few people with vision,(Yourself & Bob Lefsetz being the main influences)
I have begun to believe that with bit of hope that it can work, but it has to change in a major way. The old rule book must be thrown into the fire and forgotten.
So, I'm strapping on my fightin' boots and preparing to do whatever I can to make the music matter.

Life is a Journey, so keep following your heart. Be kind to family and friends. Remember family and friends come holidays. Remember to change your underwear and brush your teeth everyday,
Deb
God bless
@ derek, "Oh and just to rub it in, I was born in Silicon Valley, California."

This made me laugh, hehe. It's exceptionally interesting to me that I fit most of what your wiki quote about an entrepreneur is about. The only thing I'm lacking is the successful stuff...but I'm still alive and kicking, so that'll change I hope
Thank you for you whole website and for your lauding of the entrepeneur!
I am often over confident and very quick to act on ideas before I think them through. This has resulted in a lot of mistakes which I have learned a great deal from. If I look back at it, I wouldnt change a thing because the mistakes I made, made me whio I am today
