Popkomm interviews with exhibitors

Last week, I went to the PopKomm Music Conference in Berlin, Germany.

Since I had no real business need to be there, I tried to be the eyes and ears of my musician clients, bringing my video camera around to every company that was exhibiting there, and asking them questions from a musician's point of view.

So, here are the edited videos from 10 companies that seemed worth talking to - and the URL for each.

Whether they can help you directly or not is up to you, but I hope you find it interesting, either way.

PhonoNet, digital distribution to German radio and journalists

Relab, custom software for hosting your own remix contest

ForEars, an Italian record label

SongLink, a UK-based pitch-list for songwriters

VIP-Booking, online database of European venue/touring contacts

Bertus, a Dutch one-stop distributor

ArtistXite, a widget for selling music

MusikWoche, the Billboard Magazine of Germany

StereoMinds, production and songwriting team from Frankfurt

SonXs, music video uploading and voting

Derek, thanks always been too busy to make it over to this, thanks for posting, a few of these companies I already work with, but others are new, yay!

    Hey Derek

Funny you should send this now as it is almost on topic. What is the music conference for ROCK? Apollo Heights is a great all black rock band that has an ecellent album with 6 tracks produced by Robbie Guthrie and smart guest appearance by Mos Def. Where can I send them? At ptresent I am at the Amsterdam Dance Event where we are meeting booking agents etc. I'd love to know the equivalent for rockers in Europe. Popkomm while cool is not quite the ticket for them. Unless I misjudged.

  6. Adam Sweeney (2008-10-17) #

Very cool! I've been thinking more and more about marketing my music outside the US, and this was very a very good way to get my brain back on that track.

Very good stuff, especially VIP-Booking (kinda like an exclusive version of OnlineGigs.com), ArtistXite (certainly plan on signing up for this one), and PhonoNet.

    Thanks, Derek!

  7. Steven Cravis (2008-10-17) #

    Hi Derek,

Great video interviews (and I love the Vimeo display!)

All these companies are very clever and I'd like to learn more about each one.

One thing I'd like to see in the future is info on registering with international performance rights organizations, and/or info about how international licensing is being handled. For example, I think Pandora still cannot be utilized outside the USA, mostly due to international licensing complexities. Hope I didn't go too off track here. The whole 'Europe' theme reminded me about these issues.

  8. Chuck Anderson (2008-10-17) #

None of the sites were germane to my niche which is Jazz Guitar. If you could look at my site, perhaps I could communicate more effectively with you on the state of the business as I see it.

    Thanks Chuck Anderson

    Very Cool Derek!

Thanks for passing this on to me! I played a lot of gigs in Germany with my old US Army band when I was in the Army in the late 70's, and that band is talking about having a reunion here in the United States next year so I was really interesed in Vip-Booking! I will pass this information on to our manager!

  15. Wicked D (2008-10-17) #

    Very cool!

PhonoNet & ArtistXite in particular. We're in the planning phase to push sales of Vougan's "Mind exceeding", and both of these sites show some serious potential. Of course, Sonxs is another sure-fire way to gain some exposure.

I will definitely add some of these links to the resources section of the website.

    Thanks Derek!

    Hi Derek,

Thank you for the e mail. It is very useful for bands. I am

a co-owner of Jacilyn Music. We

have a web site on C D Baby with 38 alubms listed. My

partner does play some show dates solo

but mostly we just write and enjoy

our web site. Milton is very young

compared to me. I'm 83 and still

write songs. I'll never live long

enough to record even my best songs.

Our music is somewhat dated and varied. styles ...country, gospel, christian, easy listening, children's, patriotic, blue grass,

instrumentals, comic, names and old pop. Milton Wooldridge, my partner has just released an album

"Sidemen". It is doing very well.

I appreciate your taking time to fill me in on all the opportunities. It takes all my energy to write and maintain my web site on C D Baby ...

Many thanks for all your advice and

    consideration.

May your life be filled with music,

    friends and love..

    Dear Derek

I have had some experience with a German download area called Cultureload The set up is simple and easy and they are very helpful I have found in the past German companies in general to be very good and I like there attitude and quick response I felt this was a way of getting into the European market but only partially successful

I am much more interested in selling my songs and song writing now but i have been at a bit of a lose as to how to go about it

I tried to listen to your interview with SONGLINK but like all the interview the downloads were totally distorted when i tried to listen to them so i am none the wiser I will try the link though.

I just think it's great that you send us all this information and it is very very reassuring to know that you care enough to take this much trouble on our behalf it really makes a difference THANK YOU

If there is anyone that can help New Artist and Music groups become successful, it you! So please keep doing what you are doing since you departed from CD Baby. I am an American who live and work for DOD here in Germany. If i known that you were visiting Berlin I would have went out of my way to meet you. I live three hours away from Berlin. What's up Derek; Man I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this info. My CD seems to be doing better in Europe than in the states when it comes to online sales. This also helps comfirm that Europe is still into old school r&b and soul. That is reassuring for a 50 year old indie recording artist. I will definitely get ahold of you to utilize some of these services. Thank you so much again, take care.

How nice to see one of my distributors Bertus from Rotterdam The Netherlands, giving some interesting inside information about the company and the future of music distribution.

Is distribution changing? Sure, although vinyl records are somehow still popular to sell. It even won from the cassette. And wouldn't be an idea to avoid illegal downloading, if major record companies start pressing more vinyl records instead of CD's? Think about it...

    Great job Derek!

    Hey Derek,

Great idea to include people involved in the European Music Industry.

Here's something interesting for those planning on touring europe:

There's a band in my town who found it relatively easy to book a tour in the U.K because they said they were from Canada.

To the U.K Promoters/Club owners, it gave them a new angle to promote to their audience. Instead of another Liverpool band, a band from Canada was coming.

    Cheers,

Great stuff Derek. At the present I am exploring different sounds through simple compositions. This has made me think more and more about getting out of the production centre, and play live.I feel more and more that you have to be able to play music with people.Software is great, but some how this is going further away from the human soulful element. This is how it is for me at the moment.

Derek... as always, simply incredible. You remain my #1 music/philosophy guru. What a total luxury to sit here in my little remote Montana town and get the best of Popkomm right here... incredible.

    Thank you so much.

Was watching the Bertus video and got this epiphany about my music product and what to do with it...

wonder how many of your friends that happens to? Something you send them jogs their brain and a very simple, overlooked idea forms as the solution to an overworked problem. That's what happened to me yesterday, and again, thank you,

    mon guru.
