Pandora

To start off my documentary project, I went into the office of the great Pandora, which grew out of the Music Genome Project. Enjoy!

To submit your music to Pandora, see this FAQ page on their site.

I have been putting off sending my music to pandora. I should just send it in. It looks like a great company. I kinda want to see a similar documentary about CD baby.

Always nice to watch vids about how companies operate & how they progressed from formation to present day.

No matter what you do, as Pandora did, you have to listen to & try to meet customer needs.

    Thanks for sharing!!

The documentary project is sounding very good. With some interesting surprises. Cool technology but funny that an online music company like Pandora only takes cd...But kudos to them, they don't ask unsigned artist to pay to play.

This is fascinating. It's really cool to see their focus on growing a "musicians middle class." Look forward to seeing more.

The cheapest deal that I ever did as a label owner is for an album by a solo artist that makes great trip hop.

Pandora is solely responsible for his continuing sales and genuine interest from fans. He seriously gets more popular every day due to people finding him on Pandora through their recommendation.

    It's awesome!

We are based in the UK, so we can't access it, but the record was filed with them - which you can do from anywhere.

Your record should ALWAYS be on Pandora!

Glad they finally have updated the submission process! Pandora is one of the best things to ever happen to independent artists!

i'd sure like to know how you verified that, seriously

great interview. sent my cd to them and I'm pretty sure they didn't take it, but it would be nice to get the feedback from the scoring process to help you improve your chances of getting your music on there in the future. finishing up my next project, so hopefully will have better luck with it.

I live in France and we dont have access to the site for all the stupid reasons we already know. But, blindingly, I will send my music to this guys thanks to your nice documentary, thanks Derek.

Dave Romero wanted to know how we verified that, and, I can't.

But I am pretty sure that it is 99% down to Pandora. It's a very small scale record - we sell maybe 5 CD's a week (every week though) and we do healthy itunes sales. This all started to increase from nearly zero a year ago when the album went on to Pandora. The album is nearly 4 years old and sold less than 500 copies prior to this.

What we do know is that of the 5 people a week who find our little webstore for the CD, if we ask them, they tell us, to a man, that they found it on Pandora. Also 95% of our itunes is US sales. This implies people getting it on Pandora and hopping to itunes to buy. Interestingly, 90% plus of our sales on itunes are for the whole album.

This is a tiny record and that's the only way they can be finding out about it. Having asked them, I know that it gets suggested by the Genome if you listen to Portishead, Thievery Corp and a bunch of respected artists in the genre.

The algorithms work for this artist and people love the record when they happen on it.

Just FYI, Pandora recently changed its requirements for submission. You can see an article about it here:

    Derek-

We did it. We watched your Pandora video. We submitted our music by what we learned. And last night, Pandora sent us an email with this text: "Your album 'Ocoee Road' has been accepted by the Pandora album review team! Congratulations!"

You have done more for our band financially and inspirationally from day one than you ever will know. We will be shooting a video blog on our perspective of this process. Stay tuned smile

    Onward and Upward!
