Meet-ups in London July 18-19 2009
2009-07-12
I'm coming to London next weekend: Saturday 18 July and Sunday 19 July 2009.
Thanks to the brilliant comments, below, we've got two different venues for Saturday and Sunday. Please choose just one. (Sorry they're both west-side. I tried to do east and west but oh well.)
If you can come, please click to fill out your info on one of these two pages:
Saturday, 18 July - 12 noon: Troubador - Earl's Court
Sunday, 19 July - 12 noon: Defectors Weld - Shepherd's Bush
Here's some info about the meet-ups:
JUST CASUAL CONVERSATION: No agenda. No speech. I rarely come to London, so this is just a way for me to meet all you brilliant people I only know online, and for you brilliant people to meet eachother.
PLEASE COME HUNGRY. Both of these venues are nice enough to open just for us, on the understanding that we will eat and drink! So please come nice and hungry in return. There is no admission cost, but you pay your own food and drink.
PLEASE COME SOCIAL. I'm no extrovert, but I turn it on for short bursts when needed. Please do the same. Introduce yourself to strangers. Bring cards or CDs.
That's it! It's important to use those links above to let me know you're coming, if you can make it. If you can't... see you next time!

The venue that the London Open Coffee Club Meetup group uses is a pretty good one. Not sure of the name, i think its called espirit It has a starbucks in it that they let out for free(I Think). I'm sure they wouldn't mind providing a venue for you meetup.

Hi Derek,
I can recommend Cottons on Chalk Farm Road, close to Camden Market.
It has a warm atmosphere and a funky vibe. The soundtrack is Caribbean and they serve Jamaican food and Red Stripe beer.
If you want I can call an make a reservation for Saturday or Sunday.
Here is a link to their website:
http://www.cottons-restaurant.co.uk/camden/camdenhome.html
There's also Silk & Spice, a thai/malaysian restaurant, opposite Camden market. It has a lovely ambience and oriental decor, it's larger than Cottons.
They have a website, just google Silks and Spice Camden.
Best Wishes,
Veronica.
-may the london irish centre in hammersmith?
-how about an outdoor space? just take over the priory cafe in bishops park near putney bridge tube...if we all wear rosetes...
Hi Derek- The best recommendation I can make would be the Southbank Centre..there are several locations there you should scope for an informal meeting. Concrete, a bar next to the Hayward Gallery spills out into a nice terrace. Otherwise inside the RFH here are places for an informal meet. I'm away this week in Budapest. I come back Fri and my band Last Man Standing performs at Lovebox Festival in Victoria Park Sat at 6. The next day I'm due over at Nick Cave's set at Latitudes. SO I'd love to meet up but seems we might not make it. 07813520463 is my number.
hi
im sure Merv at fortress studios
http://www.fortressstudios.co.uk/Fortress_Studios/Welcome.html chill out zone The Vestry http://www.diesekonstruction.co.uk/design/theVestry/Welcome.html
would be able to help for an east london venue. i used to work there for the rehearsal rooms and they are a good bunch and a chilled vibe. 2 mins from Old Street tube.
drop me a mail if you want me to call them.

Another suggestion is Chutney's which is close to Euston Station.
The food is cheap and delicious, Indian snacks.

Hi Derek,I use an venue just near Tower Bridge for my acoustic nights, I think the room may be available, its a cool air conditioned basement bar with about 100 capacity, the nearest stations are London Bridge or Tower Hill and are very easy to get to,If you contact me I can see if the room is available.
Cheers
Emma
There's also here - not very glamourous but central (right by Euston station) and could be available:
Saint Aloysius Church Hall For Hire
Father James McNicholas
St Aloysius Social Club
20 Phoenix Road
London
NW1 1TA
Phone: 020-7387 1971
Got your mail, will think of something, make use of the telecommunication device and get back to you within 24 hours. Looking forward x Alex
There's the Chapel Bar in Islington- drinks yes, might be light on the snacks. Drop me an email for full contact details!
The upstairs room at the Horse and Groom on Great Portland Street holds just over 50 people, it's free to hire provided the venue can be sure of making some money selling beer and food, it's a very reasonably priced pub and the landlord is great. Worth speaking to:

Sorry, I won't be able to make it on the 18th/19th (playing Latitude Festival in Suffolk) but sounds good.

Hola Derek, I have Esme my PA in London on this now as I'm still in Bolivia & won't be returning until the end of the month, give me until the end of business London time tomorrow & consider it done, Sussie is a dear friend of mine who owns the Trubadour in Earls Court on Old Brompton Rd & certainly has the capacity needed for everything, Derek just got off the Phone with the Trubadour & will get firm commitments by tomorrow afternoon so your handled!
Have a great evening where ever you are & lets speak tomorrow, Bolivia is 5 hours behind London.
I recommend you try the Marylebone hotel in Wellbeck St as a potential venue in West London...central and usually good rates and they can also provide refreshments.
been thinking...there are some business centres mainly housing music and media with attached private bars etc that would be very cool. I.e. Westbourne Studios, Strongroom, but obviously they would not necessarily be completely empty. Would that matter?
x Alex
PS Troubadour is cool by the way
I have just contacted all the promoters I know in London, and I have no doubt that one of them will come back with some sort of offer or suggestion of where to go.
Sent the word out to my London peeps and tweeted to my followers. Hope you find the perfect place.
Hey Sivers! Glad to hear you are dropping in James Bond style, here are some options: see weblinks and use googlemaps / streetview for reference if needed.

Call Peter at The Wine Press on 020 7404 6644 or contact him via the website (www.thewinepress.co.uk) he may well be able to help.
A large very cool bar on Fetter Lane EC4 so a very central location slightly to the East.
Closed at the weekends but available for free hire assuming a decent turn out which this would seem to be.
WELLL... I'll be at a Silent Retreat with Gangaji
until Sunday morning- who as you may know Kirtana dedicated her Album This Embrace to. Kirtana and I did a concert in Budapest near where the Dalai Lama visited The Heart Chakra Of The Earth Mother . Seems like you've got enough feedback for venues and I hope to be able to make it Sunday afternoon. Go In Joy

Hi Derek,
no better or firmer venue suggestions to add to the wealth of leads above. Not in London that weekend sadly, would have loved to meet you/other people here
hope it goes very well,
Caroline
I'd recommend a great West London site: an athletic club (rowing, to be specific), on the banks of the Thames with incredible views. I'm a member and can arrange for no fee for something like this.
It's booked on Saturday the 18th but open on Sunday the 19th.
Thames RC is a Victorian-era building, has a very nice bar (and a full kitchen for food), and great views of the river. It can accommodate up to 120 people for seated dinner, so 50-100 for drinks won't be a problem.

Please feel free to get in touch!
Ive contacted owners of a small live music venue 'Viva Viva' in Hornsey, North London.
Nearest tube (Turnpike lane) is about 15 min walk.
They are happy for you to use their venue....

email: amathews1@gmail.com
contact there is Andy Mathews
I know in BRIXTON: Fiesta bar it is available in the afternoons is very nice and they do snacks as well. Just google it. All the best.
One more thing sorry I cannot be at the meetings would have love to buy we are gigging in the north from friday for 3 days. How long would you be in London?
There's a cool pub just around the corner from Westbourne Park undergound station called 'The Metropolitan'. They have a couple of private rooms upstairs (40-70 people).
Here's the Website for details: http://www.themetropolitanw11.co.uk/
Hey Derek
Thanks for the email. How about Dingwalls in Camden? - not sure if they do food - but it's a great venue. Also maybe Bush Hall in Hammersmith? Look forward to meeting you
Peace
Sean
Hi Derek,
All good suggestions below regarding venues, how ever my concern lies with the actual days you are hosting the meetings. Perhaps you are limited for time, but personally week ends are chaotic gig wise, especially when I speak for other fellow musicians who travel for gigs Thursdays through to Sundays. Again, it could be a time factor but if you do want to look in to hosting your meetings on week nights, I'm sure the numbers will be up! Thanks for your time and enjoy your stay!
Kind Regards, Brooke
I have taken a look at the Legion and they happen to be closed on Sundays. They do have the capacity.

I'd see if there's anything else that fits your requirements in West London.
Take a look at Emma Wilson's note. I've played at the venue she's spoken about. They do host decent clientele ie right ambience for a weekend business meeting.
I was going to suggest the Horse and Groom Gt Portland St as well, central and easy to get to from al round London..
Chris
Hi Derek,
Sorry I won't be able to make on 18/19 as I will be in Bedford, but why don't you try http://www.vortexjazz.co.uk They will charge normally, but you might be able to negotiate with them. It is very nice venue. I hope you can find suitable venue in the end. best wishes, taeko
Hi Derek,
Too many peeps keen to organise the venues. We only need 2 venues. I think you should choose 1 or 2 people and it'll be done without letting venues or promoters down.
thanks
x Alex
Hi Derek,
You should try to contact the 12Bar Club, it's in the centre of London. Try to give Andy a call (you can tell him I gave you the number) on +44 207 240 2120.
I'm out of town next weekend, shame as I would have liked to meet up. Good luck! Grace
I also know the Cavendish Arms is available on the 19th according to their roster. It's easy to travel to and is at Stockwell Station. This is warm venue for face to face liaison.

Re: Tom Rust
I know of Viva Viva and it's a cool place, but can be problematic getting there if you don't have transport. Having said that, busses do pass, but the service is normal for suburban London.
Maybe the Legal Cafe near Chalk Farm and Belsize Park - http://www.thelegalcafe.co.uk/ they have meeting facilities and do great coffees and cakes.
Otherwise, we can go a bit more rock n roll and try the enterprise in chalk farm. They have a room upstairs which is usually a music venue, but is not always booked. They also hire it out for free and are happy to just get the crowd coming in and buying drinks etc.. you can call +44(0)2074852659 or email the manager at scott@camdenenterprise.com. for more details check out http://www.camdenenterprise.com/
Hola Derek, I just got off the phone with Susie at the Trubadour in Earls court & Saturday is available to you until 4:pm where they actually host their live music venues for Saturday evenings so even if you ran a little behind I don't see a problem & Sunday afternoon is wide open for you! Derek in my personal opinion & experience of being both a guest at the Trubadour & showcasing a couple of my artists at this venue I can assure you you & your guests will not be disappointed, you can feel the ambiance of the facility from the moment you enter the place, keeping in mind this was a regular place for Hendrix & Joplin back in the day
Susie's contact is +44(0)207 370 1434, please let me know & I'll make this happen for you Derek, as I mentioned before it will be difficult for me to make it back from Bolivia for this weekend but knowing you there will be many more of these opportunity's in the very near future & I would personally like to host the next one in Cannes.
)
Have a fantastic day & look forward to hearing from you asap so I can let Susie know
Alex
Wow. Sounds Awesome Derek.
Theres a really cool upmarket yet laid back bar which is my "local" in Shepherds Bush, West London.
I know the GM of the venue (called "The Defectors Weld") and although they are massively busy all day sat and sunday with a mostly muso and media crowd. They have a big upstairs bar area which usually remains shut until the evening, perfect for the 12 - 4 pm meet up your proposing.
Im waiting to hear back from them, but if its a goer - it could be a successful venue for your event.
MV
606 Club, in Chelsea, SW10, or Pizza Express Jazz Club, Dean St., W1, both might be open to it.
Sarah
Looking forward to meeting all of ya all over the weekend then. London calling baaah paa paa baa baaaa baaa bummmm.
I think you should do more like: NORTH AND SOUTH London meetings .)
for south, I'd suggest DIRTY SOUTH club in Lewisham
http://www.dirtysouthlondon.com/
Hi Derek
Re Taeko no.33 Was also going to suggest Vortex Jazz Club in East London. Drinks yes, they don't usually have food/snacks.
Transport OK but not near tube (like most of Hackney). Some of the venues suggested in Camden see no.3 may be very busy on weekend because of Camden Lock market which is a bit mental.
Be great to meet you.
large rear for partys sat no problem
sun we have a small music group there but not a problem for them

Hi Derek,
I tried the ICA but they couldn't accommodate.
Looking down the replies above I'd agree with Mark - if available, The Defectors Weld on The Green in Shepherd's Bush is definitely an ideal place and location (for your West London venue). Aside from pub itself, the area is a very media friendly part of town, easy transport links with lots of parking at nearby Westfield Shopping Centre.
Look forward to meeting you.
James
Hi Derek
Hope that all is well with you!
I know of some great venues. One is the Lane Bar
http://www.dontstayin.com/uk/london/the-lane-bar
and the other is Bar Music Hall
http://www.barmusichall.com
Sean is the contact here.
There is also the Battersea Barge
http://www.batterseabarge.com/
Peter is the contact there.
Hope this helps!
George
Looks like lots of good suggestions here so you're probably sorted. I can put you in touch with the Vortex owners if you want that.

As this thread is turning into a useful list of places, I'll add a couple of great central/west places that are a tiny bit off the beaten track in Zone 1 - both near Vauxhall tube (10-15 minute walk, 5 mins bus).
http://www.theduchessbattersea.com/ - great large pub downstairs, good food, lovely room upstairs opening on to a large roof terrace overlooking Battersea Power Station.
http://www.batterseabarge.com/ - a bit closer to the tube than the Duchess, two floors - downstairs has stage and PA. Moored on the Thames - great location to spy on MI6 HQ...
Both normally free to hire - barge needs assurance of numbers - 50-100 is what they say they need to make it worth their while.
I'm around on Saturday, so hope to make it along to wherever you choose. If you end up near Stoke Newington on Sunday, come along to the Green where we're playing some New Orleansy funky brass from 12-3
I'm replying on behalf of Pete Jenner - see below for some western suggestions:

Best etc...
Hi Derek,
The GM of the West London venue I was talking to, has confirmed he can do the event for you, please see his email to me, below:

Hi Mark,
the snug bar on the 1st floor of Defectors is available on both Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th July between 12pm and 4pm. Let me know which day you'd prefer asap and i'll book you in. There'll be no hire fee and no minimum spend.
How does that all sound?
Thanks,

Hello!
My friends Colette and Giles have a beautiful pub in the heart of Clerkenwell called The Coach & Horses. Great food and booze, a down to earth, stylish venue, it's North/Central and they are fantastic hosts. Can't recommend it enough...
www.thecoachandhorses.com
I'd be more than happy to arrange it for you.
Cheers! Abi
Hi Derek
What a pity you chose two places both in south west London, difficult to get to from my bit (Hackney East London). if you think of London as a clock and the hand is on 8 0 clock both venues are beside each other on the hand!
I know you said you'll come again (and do let me know when you do) but next time remember North, South and east London are pretty cool too :(
I know. I tried. I made a bunch of calls but the only two good venues available were both west. Right on good tube lines, though. Sorry! -- Derek
Derek, now that you have your two venues, fabulous! See you there! To be able to now have the opportunity to shake your hand and to thank you personally for all you've done w.r.t. making it possible for me to sell my songs worldwide via CDBaby. You're just the Geezer of Geezers and you're my hero!
Big Hugs and Blue Skies.

Hello Derek,
I was really disappointed that I couldn't make it down to London to meet you on your recent visit. I just wanted to say thanks in person for all the help that CD Baby has given me. I now get contacted from all over the world in response to the dark, emotive neo-classical stuff that I sing and create. 90% of these contacts are through CD Baby. Thanks again and I wish you all the very best with your new ventures.

PS - I'm starting a new performance project in the UK in the next few months. If this successful I intend to do the same in the States. Would it be OK if I emailed you about it sometime? I would be really grateful for a state-side perspective!

Sorry I missed the chance to meet you, Derek. I was in Spain, but would have really relished the opportunity to connect. Hopefully there'll be another time. Perhaps you might put Manchester on your GoogleMaps list of places to head to. There's a lot going on musically here. And it's a great town, with terrific factory brick revitalization all over for a different kind of a view. Cheers. LL.
Sorry I can t help as I work on cruise liners as a singer guitarist and will do so until December, regards Ron
Cant believe I missed Derek visit again. I was on tour on NE Brazil and came back last week. As someone has already said - there will be next time and please give us enough warning and we will be able to organise good and free venue for the meetings.
Thanks
